How to Brew

A great cup of coffee is easy to make if you follow a few simple guidelines!

  1. Make sure your equipment is clean and dry — the most important thing is that no old grounds are still around on the parts — this residue lends a bitter and rancid flavor to your new coffee.
  2. Grind your beans right before brewing, if possible. Grind it according to how you will brew it. Here are some guidelines:
    1. Percolator: coarse grind (5-10 seconds)
    2. French press: halfway between coarse and fine, as evenly ground as possible
    3. Filter drip machine: very fine grind (10-13 seconds)
    4. Espresso machine: most fine grind possible (25 seconds)
  3. Use filtered water if your tap water is not good. If you use tap water let it run a few seconds before filling your pot, and be sure to use cold water.
  4. Use 1 to 2 tablespoons of ground coffee for every six ounces of water... and of course, adjust to your taste!
  5. If you are making your coffee using a French press, leave the water and grounds together for between 2 and 4 minutes.
  6. Enjoy your coffee as soon after brewing as possible — the flavor starts to decrease as soon as it's ready. Coffee left on an electric heating plate starts to taste bad after only 15 minutes so consider using a thermal carafe, or brewing smaller pots throughout your day!
  7. Never, ever reheat coffee. (Or if you do, don't say we didn't warn you!)
